It is said that if you find a penny face up it is good luck, and a penny face down is bad luck. But, to me, they are both lucky because I am now one cent richer! Yes, I am the person who picks up random coins that have gone unnoticed or unwanted. I know the value of money no matter how small.
Every coin I get (except quarters—those are for laundry) I put in an old water jug, which I’ve had for more than five years. I’ll even add the random dollar or two if I have it to spare. Surprisingly the jug is only half full, but it is very heavy and I can only imagine how much is inside. I’m almost giddy with excitement thinking about its worth. But alas, I will not touch the jug unless I am adding to it because the purpose is to save. So, the jug stays buried in my closet until I’m ready to treat it like a slot machine.
I have amassed a nice amount of money over the years and you can do it too. This is a great way to save up for that something special: a nice anniversary gift, a vacation, or whatever your heart desires that your money jug can afford.
The great aspect about this savings cheat is that coins are valued pretty low (in terms of U.S. currency), and many people cast them aside without thinking twice. Generally, when you budget it is in whole dollars, so all that extra change has the potential to add up because change can really make a difference. Yes, pun intended.
I’m saving all of my change for the big trip in 2018!
